Vet Appointment
Today went really well. Jack's and Rudyard's only reaction to distemper is a lot of sleepiness, which is how I like it. We also got some flea stuff, so hopefully that craziness will get well under control.
The ladies at the desk really enjoyed watching the boys walk around the waiting room on the leash. I had it set up so I would only have to hold one leash, and then it broke off into two leashes that latched to their harnesses. That didn't work out very well because Jack kept dragging Rudyard around on the tile floor. Eventually, Rudyard just sat in my lap while Jack sniffed about until we were called in.
Rudyard is TWO POUNDS. He's lost 0.1 since he went in to get his fluids shot when he was sick; he's lost 0.3 since he went in for his wellness exam to meet his new vet. I know that ferrets tend to lose all their gained weight during the summer; I just hate seeing my babies so thin. I enjoy my critters being plump.
Jack is THREE POUNDS, SIX OUNCES. Holy crap in a basket. Just. Crap. Wow. He's still not a full-fledged year yet.
Poor Rud had a tough time at the vet today. Because of his lack in plumpness, both the distemper and rabies shot gave him extreme discomfort and may even have hurt a little. Of course, ferret skin is very tough, so I'm sure it was more like a pinch rather than a shot. Usually the discomfort comes from the fluid actually being injected. I don't know if that was the case here, I'm just guessing. Jack didn't even notice he got stabbed in the butt with a distemper shot.
Rudyard kinda freaked out when the vet tech was handling him; I think I may start scruffing the boys instead of letting them do it. I wonder if the vet tech was scruffing him wrong. Anywho, he peed all over the weight table and scratched the vet tech with his monstrously long claws (that is my fault! I need to clip their nails soooo badly). She bled a little and I apologized, but she seemed unconcerned. "Part of the job," she told me with a laugh.
Right now the boys are meandering about in my room. I set up a water bottle and food in the corner; I figured they would fall asleep on the bed or somewhere, but they seem pretty determined to investigate things. Which is never a bad thing. However, I am certainly very tired from the doctor's visit, so maybe I will go take a nap. :)

Gettin' Pumped
My Sunday yesterday was rockingly full.
Started off with Sunday school and gave people shots of excitement as I explain our nativity scene project (IT'S GUNNA BE SO COOL. WE ARE PLASTER CASTING, WOOOOO).
Then I went to my first Troupe Meet with SULUKULE! I am so stoked about it, I can't even tell you. We are already learning a hot choreography.
AND THEN, back to St. Greg's and youth group, I got to explain everything to parents. It was super cool. PLUS, on October 16 we are going to Noah's Ark to volunteer and pick up debris.

Showgirl's Workshop
I learned something very important last night: my spine is not made of jelly. Also, pack an extra pair of pants, because dancing in jeans SUCK.

Cockroach, anyone?
It's not that I hate bugs. If I see one, I don't think I'm going to vomit. And if it crawls over something I touched, I don't shriek in terror.
But the swarms? No, I don't like that. I feel like our kitchen is infested up to our ears. I don't like crowds... people, cockroaches, whatever. nope nope nope.

Care Credit Bummer
No, its just a credit card. Credits cards aren't a thing I can do. I guess I'm going to have to bring in Rudyard and Jack one at a time. This makes me sad. I was really hoping for some pay bit-by-bit deal.
Vetrinarians
I'm investigating a "Care Credit" deal from my vet's office. I'm still not 100% sure what it is (I sent an email to Rudyard and Jack's doctor and am now waiting for a response), but what I am hoping it is would be a pay little-by-little deal. If that is the case, I can take care of Rud's and Jack's shots and figure out little Jack's flea problem and ear problem, in case it is something serious. Which I don't think it is because he's not bothered by it and doesn't mind me touching his ear more than usual. But I have paranoia and sometimes only a professional can help me there.
I wonder if I should go back to Athens Tech and be a vet tech or something.

Booboos and Ouchies
Sam and I found some dried blood in Jack's ear! We don't know where the wound is right now, we're waiting for the stuff to flake off. I'm worried that Rudyard did it while they were wrestling; he can't hear Jack when Jack's calling out uncle. I guess I just figured that Jack would be able to shake Rudyard off if they got too rough.
God, I feel terrible! Everytime something happens to my little ones, I get mad at myself for not catching it sooner. Although, how could I catch it sooner? They were out earlier today twice and Jack had no problem in his ear. Unless he did and I just didn't notice.
Errrgh! I'm mad at myself. He seems okay. He's playing and running around the house without Rudyard right now (Rud's asleep). I wonder if he's had this problem for the past couple of days and it has causing him stress and discomfort; essentially, I'm wondering if it is linked to the green stool I had found in the cage.
Jack also has sooooo many fleas. I don't understand where they come from. Rudyard doesn't get any, or many, as far as I can tell. I might have to just wash everything down and spritz the place.
Yuck yuck yuck. I'm unhappy.

Green Stool
Green stool means something is not digesting properly. But what are they not digesting, and who does it belong to? Sam and I are cutting back on treats for the boys right now, in case it is the peanut butter yogies. If it continues, we will have to separate them cage-wise, which makes me sad. Sam thinks it may be Jack because of his very bad cat-food-eating habit.

When Depression Comes a Knockin'
It's too easy to let Her in.
You kinda have to fight it out.
The kind of fight that leaves you exhausted.
You sorta open that door,
and there She is.
And She says, "Hey, I brought cake.
And ice cream.
And tons of make-up.
And a push-up bra.
Everything that'll make you feel better."
But when you let Her in,
and She gives you all this stuff,
you realize its no different
and that you just have tons of extra shit
that you don't even need.
And you're like, "Fuck.
Why did I do that?"
And you just let Her get the best of you.
Because She's still there.
She didn't just drop it off
and leave.
She is still there,
and She's telling you bullshit
and feeding you bullshit
and making you remember when
things were better.
And instead of smiling that smile
you usually smile
when recalling memories,
you just break down.
And you cry,
because the past is the past.
It's not the future.
And you feel fucking screwed.
And you wonder why you didn't take advantage of it.
And She agrees.
You are fucking screwed.
Why didn't you take advantage of it?
So, its worth the fight
to not let Her in.
She just makes a mess of things
and leaves a bigger mess.
She kinda hangs off you when She's around
wrapping Her needy little arms around your neck
and manipulating you.
Saying, "Oh, baby, I know how you feel,
because I am that feeling.
Don't let go of me,
because then we'll both be alone.
And you don't want to be alone, do you?
So hang tight,
tight onto me.
I'm all you've got,
and no one else will get it."
Don't let Her in.
I'm warning you,
as a creature and victim
of my own self-pity.
Don't let Her in
because it will be harder to make Her leave.

Litter Training
No pictures will be taken during this process. I can't will myself to do it.
Rudyard has been trained to use newspaper. For most cases, if he needs to poop and there is newspaper in the corner, he will obediently go in the specific spot.
Jack knows how to use newspaper and theoretically knows how to use a litter pan. However, when he first came home and was isolated in his own cage, he proved to me that he doesn't know how to use either on his own terms.
Newspaper is getting sparse these days. Although the Flagpole is free and in abundance, I can't always find time to take a trip downtown and collect newspapers. So the proper solution, I thought, was to litter train the ferrets into using actual ferret-safe-litter.
I have the pans. Since Douceline has gone back to live with my mother permanently (she is very happy, by the way), I have an extra oversized litter pan as well as a corner litter pan that came with Sam's rat cage. Or maybe it was given to us? I don't remember.
ANYWAY, nobody poops in 'em. So now its time that some furrts poop in 'em.
I set it up last night. I'm starting off with newspaper IN the litter pans (clever, eh?). The large one I just lined. The corner one is tiny, so I put shredded newspaper in it.
When I checked up this morning, NO ONE pooped in the big litter pan (I realize this is normal because they do not like to poop all the way downstairs. The ceiling is too high), and EVERYONE pooped in the tiny corner litter pan. ON TOP of that, everyone pushed the newspaper out.
I'm trying to think positive here: Yay! They pooped in the pan. Yeah, it sucks they pooped directly on it and felt inclined to toss the "litter" out, but at least we are starting somewhere.

Fancy Rats
Ahhhh, another beautiful video of my other critters! The ones most forget about, because of their surreptitious ways and overall smallness in character!
How I missed these babes while I was at the beach. I have never been on a beach trip without them and I thought of them everyday, hoping they were doing well, getting along, and not stinking up their homestead too terribly.
When I got back from the beach last Sunday, I let my little Vincent and my little Liam shuffle about in my room for about two hours. Vincent was very cuddly with me, as the old ones often get (just like his grandpops, Mark) and even little Liam stuck close.
Anywho, this video was made before I went to the beach. It was actually supposed to be a filler movie if the Film Festival didn't get enough submission, but we got aplenty and so now I get to keep this little video all to myself.
I made one a few years ago called Rodent Tails: The Rats and the Clementine. It was supposed to have a very Nature Show/Discovery Channel element to it. I'll go ahead and post that too if anyone is interested. It has Mark in it. :)
The Beach: Day 4, Wednesday
I didn't have internet while I was away, so I wrote everything on paper (le gasp!) to record onto my blog later. I was glad I wrote everything down, otherwise I may forget all of the wonderful details each day had.

Day 4, Wednesday
Mommy picked me up this morning and made me try four different bags. She was only able to carry me in one; I fell out of the others.
I got put in timeout today for going under the couch. I know it is timeout because she scruffed me and put me in the cage without Jack. I decided it was okay though because I got to drink some water and eat some food without Jack being in the way. When timeout was over, she opened the cage door; I didn't come out because I was still eating.
When I did come out finally I played lots in the spare bedrooms. I got Jack to come too, and he crawled under the sheets while I pounced on top of him. He's not very good at crawling under the sheets, so I will have to teach him that as well.
He's getting very good at falling. I think soon he will be a professional.
I decided to let Jack have my robot bee to play with. He's very proud of the bee and carries it around with him around the house. I am okay with that because I only like the robot bee when it jiggles really fast.
Jack was able to flip me today and I was very surprised because he's not always so good at wrestling. He got too excited though and I still won. I am glad I have Jack. I like to be left alone sometimes, but sometimes I really like it when he is here to play with. When I went to this new house last year with Sam and Mommy, I did not have as much fun as I am having now.
I worry that sometimes I play too hard with Jack, but then I decide that its okay because its probably good for him. He will never learn how to kill a snake if I am easy on him. Also, one day he may find out about his bigness and decide to use that method of snake killing. We shall see though.
Anyway, we have to practice how to be good snake killers because one day we may have to kill a snake to protect Mommy and Sam.

Day 3, Tuesday
I found out that I can fit under a door!
I found this out after Rudyard got in big trouble with Mommy and he lost his collar inside the couch. Now nobody is allowed inside the couch, so I have to find new places for my toys. After Rudyard lost his collar, Mommy took mine and put it on him. She said, You can hear Jack. Rudyard can't. I need to know where he is.
So I didn't have my collar on anymore, which is a relief because sometimes I just hate it. And we were all in the second bedroom together, me Rudyard, Mommy, and my Sam. We were playing super hard and Rudyard was whomping me good--he's a very good whomper. Probably better than my Sam. Some ferrets at the shelter were also good whompers, but Rudyard is very smart. He grabs my ear with his teeth then tugs until I flip over. When I cry, he doesn't let go. He just shakes me harder. One day I will be very smart, but right not he is too fast for me.
As I ran around on the floor in the other bedroom, I noticed a big gap under the door. I tried different parts, but only the part at the end of the door was the widest. I slipped right through! It was so cool. But I realized that nobody was with me on the other side of the door and I was alone in the house. I stuck my head under the door, hoping that I would get followed. Mommy and my Sam wanted Rudyard to try it, but he kept getting caught on the collar! So if I wore the collar I probably couldn't have gotten through, because Rudyard is much smaller than me.
So Mommy and my Sam did something super awesome! Mommy left the room and closed the door behind her, so when I crawled under it I wouldn't be alone. It was very exciting. And then, right after me, Rudyard came under without his collar on. My Sam had taken his collar off so he could play and have fun too. I could tell Rudyard was also excited.
After that, Mommy and my Sam let us wander by ourselves for a little bit. We weren't allowed in the living room with the couch, but we were allowed to explore three bedrooms, three closets (although one Mommy decided was a bad idea because of the big painting we tried to dig through), and a bathroom with a tub.

Day 2, Monday
I woke up so early that Mommy and Sam though it was still yesterday. I made a fuss until they let me and Jack out and then we got to play in the bedroom without our collars on. I like when we don't have to wear our collars. They used to feel very heavy, but now that just tickle my fur.
I went inside and outside the bedsheets and explored the whole place till there was nothing left. Then mommy and Sam put us back and I slept fine for a while.
I like the new house because Mommy and Sam let us run everywhere. They still don't like it when I go under the couch--which I think they would change their minds if they could go with me and see how much fun it is. I like it because it is dark and tight; everything smells and I'm not even touching the floor when I walk around inside. It makes me feel really good, like it could be the most perfect place in the world.
The new house is dusty. Jack and I keep sneezing. This morning I kept trying to teach Jack how to kill a snake. He doesn't want to learn. So I chase hm everywhere until I'm close enough to pounce him. I've been able to teach Sam how to kill snakes, and even Mommy some even though she doesn't like to kill snakes. Sam is smart and I think he likes learning about these important things. I have tried to teach digging too, but I don't think Sam or Mommy understand. At least I've taught them how to play and wrestle, though, which is very important.
When we got put back in our cage, I realized Mommy forgot to close one of the doors. This was exciting, so Jack and I snaked out of the cage and went to surprise Mommy and Sam in the bedroom. They were happy to see us and let us play without our collars some more. Mommy and Sam are very nice. Sam let me and Jack drink from his cup when we were thirsty.
Drinking from a cup is really fun. There are walls all around your head when you go inside for a drink. It's a tight space and all the smells are right there in my nose. It reminds me of the couch and this makes me happy,
I've been trying to teach Jack how to fall. He's very cowardly, but he will fall with me at the same time I fall. He's getting better, though, and that is good. The bedroom has a very tall bed and is good for practice. When he learns how to fall expertly, I will have to teach him how to climb back up. He's not good at that and still waits for Mommy and Sam to pick him up.
There is another bedroom that has a bed in it lower to the ground. I rubbed myself all over it. It's a very fun bed. It's a good place to practice falling too.
I also found out that the couch at the new house has a special secret opening. You go under the couch like normal, then inside the first layer, and then inside another place that is darker and more closed in than the last! On top of that, there are lots of springy things that are fun. I lost my collar in there. I think Mommy was very mad at me, but I'm not sure. She held a peanut butter treat on the other side of the hole for me. When I got out, she picked me up, let me finish it, and then put me back in the cage.
Maybe she will be okay with the couch after all?

The Beach: Day 1, Sunday
I didn't have internet while I was away, so I wrote everything on paper (le gasp!) to record onto my blog later. I was glad I wrote everything down, otherwise I may forget all of the wonderful details each day had.
"The Somewhere House" by Jack Aubrey Spiffles, Edited by Clara Mongoose
Day 1, Sunday
This morning I was very confused. Normally Mommy lets us play for longer, but instead she strapped on the uncomfy harnesses. I said What's going on?!? and Rudyard told me we were going Somewhere.
I didn't know what Somewhere was! I wasn't sure to be excited or scared. Eventually Mommy picked us up and attached leashes to the terrible harnesses. Then she took us Somewhere which was outside the house. Somewhere is a hot place. It is uncomfortable. Rudyard was very good. He walked along with Mommy in the grass. I didn't like it and I didn';t know I was supposed to follow. Instead I stayed put and cried. So Mommy picked me up and got into the car. I had never been in this car before. It is my Sam's car. My Sam has a nice car. When we got inside, he made it cold for us and I was more comfortable.
I was very nervous. I felt the ground shaking, which I already knew that it meant we were moving in the car. And Mommy was holding us very tight. Rudyard seemed excited. He kept saying we were going Somewhere.
I was confused again! I though Somewhere was outside. But soonly Rudyard fell asleep next to Mommy's feet. I was too nervous to sleep at first. I ran about and climbed on Mommy. I put my face in a spot where cold air blew out and looked out a window. Everything was going so fast! We were still in our harnesses and Mommy was holing onto our leashes. I couldn't move very far.
Eventually I pooped in the car, but Mommy wasn't mad. I think knew I wasn't feeling well. After that I tried Rudyard's trick of falling asleep. It was very helpful.
Soon we stopped and got out of this car. I thought Oh! This is Somewhere! It was still hot and sticky. I didn't like it. Mommy didn't take our harnesses off. A strange man came up to us and wanted to pet us. I didn't want to be petted because I was so nervous, so Mommy told the stranger that I was stressed. She let me and Rudyard dig in the firt some. Rudyard showed me where the good dig spots were and I followed him around. Then my Sam came and helped Mommy take us back to the car.
If that was Somewhere, it was boring!
Rudyard said we were still going Somewhere, though, so he must be right. He's smarter than me. Mommy let us drink water and have some treats. She told us we were being very good and that we were halfway there.
I copied Rudyard and fell asleep at Mommy's feet. Sometime later, I woke up and saw that Rudyard gad crawled into Mommy's lap. The next time I woke up I saw he had come back down, so I went and crawled into Mommy's lap.
Mommy help me close and kissed me. I felt her heart beating next to mine and I fell asleep to its rhythm. My Mommy and my Sam are nice. The love me very much. I never slept with Mommy before until now and its nice.
The next time I woke up, Mommy and my Sam were picking us up. They took us out of the car and into a cold house. Rudyard was excited. This is it! We're here!
Since I got to the Somewhere house, I've had a lot of fun. There are no carpets here and everything is slippery. Rudyard and I chased each other and pooped everywhere. We got inside the tallest beds I've even seen and crawled around in the sheets.
Mommy pulled out our toys--she had brought our favorites! My Barbie doll was in the bag, and the robot bee, and my squeaky tennis balls! Rudyard's favorite Pirate Duck was even there. We got very busy claiming spots.
At one point I was on the tall bed with my Sam and I was so excited I gave him kisses. Then I gave him more kisses because I wanted him to put me down on the floor. He did and I skipped about and played.
Now Rudyard and I are sleeping in our Somewhere house that Mommy and my Sam set up in the living room. I wonder how long we are going to stay in the Somewhere house?
